[::: SMD 5 by Helge :::]
Released at Breakpoint 2008

Wade:
I see this picture as an original spin on traditional scene art, with its vivid colours, scantily clad woman and reptile creature alluding back to the Vallejo craze of the 90s. Helge has a beautiful way of mixing cartoon style with textured painting, reminiscent of the classical Disney style. The technique, proportion and basic composition are faultless, but what I like most about this painting are all the features and details that hold my attention. A fine piece of work from a fine artist.

[::: Hope by Karine Hornberg :::]
Released at The Gathering 2008

Wade:
I cant fault the artist for trying here, but there are numerous basic flaws that makes me think that Karine may be new to digital painting. The perspective is way too ambitious for a start, and fails quite badly, with the arm positioned at a strange angle and various proportion faults. The picture also neglects basic values, shadows and highlights, and thus appears flat. On a more positive note, the flower appears quite nicely painted and some efforts have been spent texturing the skin. I guess we all have to start somewhere.

Wade:
I have to give respect for the painstaking attention to detail and the patience that must have gone into this picture. Sadly, the characters really dont blend into the image and appear superimposed. The perspective of the landscape appears in conflict with the models, lacking atmospheric colour and lighting. The characters appear too harsh and inconsistent. The image is not a lost cause in my opinion, however, and could be transformed into a decent piece with some carefully considered overpainting and colour adjustments.

[::: Last Hope by Trenox-Last :::]
Released at Breakpoint 2008

Wade:
I am not an expert when it comes to 3d art, but I know what I like. Last Hope is an incredibly detailed and polished piece of artwork. The colours are subtle and very pleasing to the eye, and the lighting does a fantastic job of creating depth and atmosphere. The perfectly proportioned soldiers blend nicely into the distance, the shadows are soft and the foreground window is a nice touch. The artist knows his stuff and achieved everything he set out to do.

[::: Roger Sunde by Tyrael :::]
Released at The Gathering 2008

Wade:
To cover the bad points first, there appears to be some issues with the hands and feet, which appear disproportionate. The angle of his left arm appears awkward and blends too suddenly into the shadow. The background is another aspect I do not like, with white streaks stealing too much attention from the foreground and not casting any backlighting on the figure. Now, in regards to the positives, the character is beautifully textured, with a nice dirty and gritty look. The ground actually looks bumpy, like you could touch the screen and feel it under your fingers. The artist shows potential and has his strengths, but would perhaps benefit from using more anatomical references.

[::: Outsidethebox by Volant :::]
Released at The Gathering 2008

Wade:
Its a cool and quirky idea, which I like very much, but I do feel that the image is too simplistic and quite bare at first glance. The shadows and highlights appear a little too sharp and prominent, which isnt particularly kind on the eyes. A decent enough image on the whole, but merits more for its theme and motif than its aesthetical impact.
